The Village of Arts and Humanities was founded in 1986 by internationally celebrated artist Lily Yeh, recognizing the need for social revitalization through the arts in North Philadelphia. For over 14 years, the Village has been creating an urban community through its holistic programs which use arts education to create jobs, reconstruct neighborhoods, and promote a viable economic base.

From it origin, the crux of the Village’s mission has been its Education through the Arts Program, which provides professionally facilitated art workshops and training to area children. Through after school and summer classes and open workshops for children between the ages of 6 and 18, the Education through the Arts Program provides a variety of media including painting, sculpture, mosaicking, theater, and video. The ultimate goal of the program is to nurture innate creativity and recognize the artistic inclinations of its students. Thus, cultivating artistic potential in an urban area where public schools are often lacking arts education.
